When I was a child
I believed that at any given moment
I could fall off the face of the earth
and be up for grabs.
Gravity could just decide to give me away.
And I believed that my grandfather,
Who I had only ever seen in pictures,
He lived in heaven.
With his sad eyes and
His easy smile
He sat on the puffy clouds of heaven,
And although I couldn’t see him,
I felt certain he returned the wave I sent from the open window of my mother’s car.
If gravity were to give me away to the
Frightening Expanse of Infinity,
I felt certain that my grandfather would catch me
and let me live with him in heaven.
Now, I am older than a child and younger than a crone,
And I believe different things.
I believe that in our simple and dignified humanness
There is freedom.
And now, in every cloud I see
A brooding lover, an undulating river of sadness,
A line of wispy legged chorus girls,
A bear, and anvil a cat.
Each face I see an intimate of my imagination.
